Everyone likes to get away for two or three days for a refreshing change of scenery and you will particularly enjoy weekend breaks in Devon because of its wide open spaces and breathtaking coastline. It is one of the largest counties in England and boasts two national parks and two coastlines.

Although it remains one of the few areas in the country where it is still possible to get far away from the madding crowd, it is now surprisingly easy to reach by car, train and by air to Exeter Airport.

There are so many interesting places to visit in the county that it would require several weekend breaks in Devon just to scratch the surface so we would suggest concentrating on one particular area at a time. To get an instant flavour of what life in Devon is all about, you could start in the South Hams district between the River Dart (where you can visit Agatha Christie’s delightful home) and Plymouth with its historical associations with The Pilgrim Fathers and Sir Francis Drake. The area also encompasses the bustling yachting harbours at Salcombe and Dartmouth.

Another good centre for one of your weekend breaks in Devon would be towards the West of the county which is an ideal base for exploring the stunning scenery and quaint villages on Dartmoor. Alternatively you could plump for North Devon where you will find Exmoor, the wide sandy surfing beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde together with the picturesque fishing harbours of Clovelly and Lynmouth.

To finally get your bearings and fully appreciate what the county is all about, aim for a stay somewhere around the cathedral city of Exeter. This will enable you to explore delightful seaside resorts such as Sidmouth and Beer on the World famous Jurassic Coast and to get a taste of the English Riviera around Torbay.
