Weekend breaks in Somerset are the ideal choice if you only have two or three days to spare because it is so easy to reach by motorway. There is a huge choice of things to do and places to stay to suit every interest and budget.

The beautiful city of Bath, with its rich Roman and Georgian heritage, is high on the list of must-sees. Don’t miss its glorious abbey, the Roman Baths, the Pump Room and the Royal Crescent, as well as the Fashion Museum and art collections at the Holborne Museum.

From Bath, why not head off west and wander around Glastonbury to take in the panoramic views from the mysterious Tor with its links to Arthurian legend. From here, it’s not far to the fascinating cave complex at Wookey Hole and to Cheddar Gorge.

Wells is an interesting little city with a beautiful cathedral which is often used as a location for films and television series while historians might like to visit the little village of Westonzoyland close by the site of the Battle of Sedgemoor.

You will need at least one or two weekend breaks in Somerset to see all that the county has to offer and you should certainly allocate one just for exploring Exmoor and the craggy coastline around Porlock. A highlight has to be a ride on the West Somerset steam railway, the country’s longest heritage line which runs from Bishop’s Lydeard to Minehead on the coast. Make sure you stop off en route at the charming village of Dunster with its famous castle and yarn market.
