Lanwithan Estate
In a sunny, peaceful setting overlooking the Fowey River and surrounded by fields and parklands with mature trees. From our private river bank you may fish or take a quiet walk. We have an 18 hole pitch and putt course in the cider orchard, barbecue beside the mill pool, a games room and a grass tennis court. You can hire rackets, a dinghy and fishing rods.
At the Lanwithan Estate you are comfortably central to reach National Trust houses, beautiful gardens and safe sandy coves, to walk on breathtaking cliff tops or visit the many famous and picturesque fishing villages. We also have extreme surfing, the national cycle network, scenic circular walks, challenging golf courses, horse riding stables, our medieval Restormel Castle and the Tudor bridge on your doorstep. We are only 10 minutes’ drive from the Eden Project with its giant botanical biomes.
Cottages and apartments on the Lanwithan Estate
Moorside (3 star, sleeps 2) was once the sewing room of the manor house. Now a cosy and bright first floor apartment with a beautiful view from its sun deck across the fields to the river. Dogs welcome.
Isolda’s (4 star, sleeps 2 + cot) is a comfortable ground floor apartment in the south-facing wing of the Manor house. From Isolda’s dining table you have a lovely view of the gardens and across the valley, which you can also enjoy sitting outside in the sun, next to the roses.
Bridgend (4 star, sleeps 2 + cot) is a pleasant little 19th century cottage in the village of Lostwithiel only a few minutes’ walk from the shops, pubs, restaurants and the River Fowey. You are welcome to use the amenities at Lanwithan, just three minutes walk away.
Little Scotland (3 star, sleeps 4) is an attractive lodge at one entrance to our farm estate, still has the original lead latticed windows and three foot cob walls. The lovely lounge has an inglenook fireplace, cloam-oven and log burner, and the garden runs up to the orchard. Dogs welcome.
Granny’s (4 star, sleeps 4 + cot) is named after Granny Nichols who used to stay here more than 150 years ago while visiting her son in the farmhouse. This charming cottage has a fine glassed-in granite staircase, romantic four poster bed in the master bedroom, an open fire and a well that has been crafted into an unusual coffee table with glass top so you can see the water below. The second bedroom looks onto the rare 35ft rhododendron specimen tree in the back garden, a blaze of crimson in spring.
Poundhouse (sleeps 4 + cot) was once the laundry and pound for cider production. It is now a pleasant ground floor apartment with access out to a large south facing garden with views over the Fowey Valley.
Tristan’s (4 star, sleeps 5 + cot) was formerly the governess’ residence and the nursery, and is now a comfortably large first floor apartment in the south-facing wing of the Manor house. It has idyllic views of the gardens and the Fowey valley from its cosy living room, the sunny double bedroom and the spacious triple bedroom.
Lanwithan Farmhouse (4 star, sleeps 6 + cot) is a traditional, large and comfortable farmhouse with original granite and slate flagstone floors.
Madderhay Cottage (sleeps 6 + cot) is an attractive cottage, reached by its own private drive and offers unique peace and tranquility. The two upstairs bedrooms have lovely views across the fields to the river Fowey. The cottage is surrounded by wildlife and near one of the few reed beds left in Cornwall, a protected area for butterflies. Dogs welcome.
Riverside cottages in Malpas, near Truro
Freda’s (sleeps 5 + baby) was the pub for Malpas and in the early 1800’s and is now a cosy little cottage. It is joined to Lornas (sleeps 6 + baby), which is a lovely spacious house with an open fire. Both have superb river views from nearly all the rooms, separate gardens, and share a path down to the water’s edge. Dogs welcome.
The cottages are situated in the idyllic hamlet of Malpas, which has a lovely pub called the Heron Inn, where you will find good food and great beers and ales. You can bring your own boat (there is a public slip in the village or you can leave your boat on the shingle at the foot of our private quay) or you can hire a rowing dinghy from us by the week.
There are around 65 species of beautiful birds exploring the river banks and the heronry opposite has a resident albino heron. The ideal spot for walking, birdwatching, sailing, fishing, river trips to St Mawes and Falmouth, and Truro is just 3 miles away.
There’s plenty of choice at the beautiful, unspoiled Lanwithan Estate on the edge of Lostwithial, with self-catering cottages at both the manor and old farm house. Explore the cider orchard, enjoy the pitch and putt course, or hire a dinghy and fish on the river Foy.
