The three luxurious en-suite bedrooms in the house have lots of period character including a four poster bed, Victorian slate fireplaces and even a restored ‘Thunderbox’ toilet from the 1870s! The huge sash windows make the most of the pretty garden and countryside views.
The Old Stables to the rear of the house sleeps 3 in a kingsize double and sofa bed. It has its own entrance, cosy woodburning stove and an en-suite bathroom.
Breakfast at The Old Rectory is truly special (so good it has won a Breakfast Award!). Even if you stayed here for a week, you could try a different cooked breakfast every single morning. And for a few months of the year we can provide a totally homegrown breakfast.
Our walled kitchen garden supplies homegrown fruit and vegetables and eggs, and our own homemade sausages and home-cured bacon are from our free range rare breed pigs. We offer 4 types of locally smoked fish, all dairy products are from an organic farm less than 2 miles away and even the bread is baked locally.
You are welcome to enjoy the house and garden during your stay; watching the sun set over the sea from our ‘lookout’ is not to be missed! Come on a guided tour of the garden or help us feed the pigs, sheep, ducks and hens. We also have a spare bee-suit if you’d like to join Anna on a sunny day to look inside the beehive.
Our bed and breakfast is the ideal base for walking and exploring footpaths from the door – we’re only 2 miles from spectacular coastline. The North Cornish coast has something for everyone – bustling seaside towns with family beaches, historic fishing harbours, secluded sandy coves, and of course some excellent surfing beaches.
After a busy day exploring Cornwall, you can unwind with a delicious evening meal in our restored Victorian Greenhouse with views over the garden.
Then relax in the Guest Lounge, which has French doors opening out on the veranda and lawn. In winter it’s the perfect place to curl up by the log-burning stove with a good book.
Romantics, historians and poets will love the Old Rectory’s literary connection. Thomas Hardy, the famous poet, stayed here and fell in love with the Rector’s sister-in-law, Emma. Hardy immortalised Emma and the Rectory in his novel; ‘A Pair of Blue Eyes’.
He returned to St Juliot when Emma died and wrote some of his greatest poetry, deeply moving in its memories of the past, of the Rectory, and of the ‘wandering western sea’. Many of the places Hardy mentions can still be recognised 130 years later.
